Elizabeth Pagel Basta

July 11, 1939 – September 6, 2025

“Beth” was born in Oshkosh, WI to Max and Ruth Meinecke Pagel. She graduated from Washington HS in Milwaukee and then attended Cardinal Stritch College. While still in her late teens, she lost both parents within a span of only 3 months, and went to live with her mother’s sister Myrtle Meinecke (Archie) Schubert. Beth had a passion for art and music and was taking voice lessons as a soprano when she met her future husband, Jim. He was her piano accompanist, and romance was soon in the air. They were married in 1960 and lived in Maryland while Jim was in the Marine Band. In 1967, they adopted their son Jeffery Basta. Beth introduced him to the world of theater and music as the family acted in local opera productions and even performed at the White House.

In 1982, Jim and Beth moved to Clemmons NC, and joined Home Moravian Church. Beth dived into local history, becoming a docent in Old Salem, and loving to dress in period clothing. Beth also loved painting, following the escapades of English royalty, and butterflies. Butterfly images and patterns could be found all around her, and it became her signature theme. She loved collecting dolls and making Moravian stars for Christmas trees.

Beth was predeceased by her parents, her son Jeff, her husband of 60 years Jim, cousins Burton Schubert, Billie Wenzel, and Phyllis Grunewald. Surviving are cousins, David Shubert, Lari Wenzel, Karl and Steve Grunewald, Shubert Wenzel, Jeanne Connor, and Tami Kipple. Beth was a member of Unity Moravian Church in Lewisville, NC where a memorial service will be held at a later date to be announced. In lieu of flowers, please make gifts to Unity Moravian Choir or The Salem Community Orchestra.
