Joanna Burnside Grundman, 91, passed away peacefully Monday, February 26, 2024 at High Point Medical Center, with family by her side.
She was born on May 27, 1932 in Guilford County to the late Jay Forest and Clara Mae Burnside.
Joanna, affectionately known as Mama Jo, Nana Jo and Nana to her grandchildren, was a stay-at-home mom who was always there when her family needed her. Joanna took pride in providing comforting meals for her family, and could pack a perfect school lunch. She enjoyed making chocolate drop oatmeal cookies and fried apple pies for her family. Joanna was an avid reader. She enjoyed taking out of town trips with her daughter Jo, her sister, Beatrice, and her niece Gayle. Later in life, Joanna, still with a very good memory and sense of humor, enjoyed laughing and joking, and was always happy to share stories with her family about growing up in Cone Mills White Oak Village.
In addition to her parents, Joanna was preceded in death by her husband Samuel Paige Grundman of 55 years; sisters, Eunice Leonard, Kathleen Tedder, Beatrice Setzer, Loretta Cox; brothers, Jay Burnside Jr, Leo Burnside, Larry Burnside; and a very special niece, Gayle Long.
Joanna is survived by her daughter, Jo Blackwell of Norwood, NC; sons, Robert (Luann) Grundman of Browns Summit, NC, Roger (Susan) Grundman of Gretna, VA, Sammy (Theresa) Grundman of Bay Minette, AL; grandchildren, Christie, Joshua, Jess, Gina, Nicole, Brad, Taylor, A.J., Grace; great-grandchildren, Gavin, Conner, Landon, Lincoln, Tauriel; and her brother Donald Burnside.
The family would like to thank the nurses in the ICU at High Point Medical Center for providing such compassionate care for our mom in her final days.
Interment will be at Lakeview Memorial Park at a later date.
