Camilla Ann Hewitt, fondly known to most as “Granny,” passed away peacefully on September 8, 2026, surrounded by her loving family.
Camilla was born on March 30, 1935, in Newton-Conover, North Carolina, to Ray and Lois Abernathy. She grew up there and eventually settled in Winston-Salem in 1972, where she became a member of College Park Baptist Church.
Camilla attended Catawba College and Lenoir-Rhyne University, where she earned her degree in education. Following graduation, she began her career as an elementary school teacher in the Newton-Conover area. She continued teaching for several years before welcoming her first daughter, Johnna Raye.
Camilla was preceded in death by her parents, Ray and Lois Abernathy; her former husband and friend, John Robert Hewitt; and her daughter, Jennifer Anne Hewitt.
She is survived by her daughter, Johnna Raye (the late Neal) Adams; her son, Robert Andrew Hewitt and wife Carol; granddaughter Drew Taylor and husband Chandler Bradford; grandson Joshua Hewitt and wife Emma; and great-granddaughter Maven Wrenn Hewitt.
The simple fact is: If you knew “Granny,” you loved her.
You could not help but fall in love with her contagious smile, her warm spirit, and her genuine desire to sit and talk about everything under the sun. And if you were lucky enough to get her talking about sports—especially the Dallas Cowboys—you were in for a treat!
More than anything, Camilla cherished the time she spent with her family and the people she held close to her heart. Her love, laughter, and unforgettable smile will remain in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.
A memorial service will be held at 12:00 p.m. on September 26, 2026, at College Park Baptist Church, 1701 Polo Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27106. The service will be followed by a time of receiving friends with the family at the church.
